Dragons of Algoron › Gem Dragons › Sapphire Dragons
Of all the Gem Dragons of Algoron, Sapphire Dragons are the ones most often heard before they are seen, and, many survivors insist, the ones most often heard instead of seen. Their voices carry through stone the way other creatures' voices carry through air.
Sapphire Dragons dwell deep beneath the earth, in caverns of blue crystal and long resonant galleries where the smallest sound returns a hundred times. They listen to the world through the rock itself. Footsteps several tunnels away, the drip of water, the shift of settling stone: to a Sapphire Dragon, every one of these is news.
Their scales begin a cloudy, pale blue and deepen with age into a clear, brilliant sapphire. The scales of an old Sapphire Dragon are said to ring faintly when struck, like a crystal glass touched with a fingertip.
Neutral in outlook, Sapphire Dragons are neither cruel nor kind so much as territorial. They guard their halls with great patience, are slow to trust, and keep careful track of who has passed through their domain and why. A visitor who is quiet and courteous may never know a Sapphire Dragon was listening. A visitor who is loud and careless will find out.
